Archives for: February 20062006-02-09Update on the Cartoon HubbubI think we'll dodge the question over whether the images should be reprinted by making this a text-only update. The diary of a Saudi man, currently living in the United Kingdom, where the Religious Police no longer trouble him for the moment. So obviously the blog's author is not a neutral party to this debate, but it beats the simplification of religious tolerance versus freedom of expression. Instead of those two ideals clashing, the blog author presents the debate about the cartoons as a political move by the Saudi government to deflect attention from its negligence in maintaining order during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The cartoons were released in September 2005 and caused some stir, but the blog provides many examples of similarly irreverent images dating back centuries. However, after 400+ people died during this year's Hajj (in a nearly identical way to 300+ people during the Hajj in 2004), Saudi Arabian papers began printing up to four stories per day polemicizing against the Danish paper and the western blasphemers. Thus the outrage from devout Islamic groups in some countries, who see this issue (blatant disrespect for the Prophet) framed as a sticking point between the two cultures. Thus the E.U.S.A can frame the issue in terms of freedom of speech, seeing this issue (blatant calls for censorship and accountability from comic book artists) framed as a sticking point between the two cultures. Although it does not solve the story, it helps one be less invested and more cynical about the world at large. Which is really the issue. Unless, of course, the linked entries are but a bunker of bunk. Enjoy the scrum.
